Rechargeable Hearing Aids

The Advent of Modern Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Modern rechargeable hearing aids exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago and have proven very popular. The big hearing aid brands have taken notice and they all introduced them. Phonak was, of course, the first hearing aid manufacturer to introduce the modern range of rechargeable hearing aids but they were quickly followed by Signia. The two market leaders introduced Lithium-Ion powered rechargeable hearing aids. The other brands initially introduced Silver-Zinc powered rechargeable hearing aids powered by the Z-Power system. However, Starkey has, in fact, delivered a Z-Power system and more recently a Lithium-Ion system as has Resound. The other brands have taken notice and we expect to see more lithium-ion powered rechargeable hearing aids in 2019.

Two Types of Rechargeable Systems

As I said, there are predominantly two modern rechargeable systems, Lithium-Ion and Silver-Zinc battery systems, with each having their strengths and weaknesses. Signia, Phonak and now Starkey have introduced Lithium-Ion rechargeable systems. Everyone else is relying on Silver-Zinc battery systems from Z-Power.  Lithium-Ion systems offer up to thirty hours of use on a single charge, however, the system does not allow replacement of the battery pack with ease. The lifetime of a Lithium-Ion battery is around five years.

Silver-Zinc technology offers slightly more hours of use on a single charge and the system combines the best of both worlds, offering over thirty hours of use on one charge, and you can change the batteries to traditional hearing aid batteries if you forget to charge the devices or have a power cut. Silver-Zinc batteries need to be replaced once a year, but it is something that you can do yourself without fuss.

While the Silver-Zinc systems are very versatile, there have been problems, that’s why most hearing aid brands are now committed to providing their own lithium-ion powered devices.

Rechargeable Hearing Aid Brands We Offer

Phonak Hearing Aids
Phonak led the charge with the introduction of their first-ever Audeo (Receiver In Canal) Belong rechargeable hearing aids. They are also one of four hearing aid brands in the list that use a Lithium-Ion power pack. The devices have proven hugely popular with hearing aid users. They have since expanded their rechargeable hearing aids range to include two Behind The Ear hearing aids. With the introduction of the new Audeo Marvel, they launched two rechargeable hearing aids.
Oticon Hearing Aids
In March 2019 Oticon announced the release of their new Opn S platform which is their latest premium device. As part of this launch, Oticon introduced a lithium-ion powered rechargeable device.
Unitron Hearing Aids
Unitron quickly followed their stablemate Phonak (both owned by Sonova) with their own rechargeable hearing aids. However, unlike Phonak, they chose the Z Powered Silver-Zinc option. They first introduced a Receiver In Canal rechargeable option but have since followed with a Behind The Ear Option and most recently introduced a new Made For Any Phone option that they are calling the Moxi All
Widex Hearing Aids
Widex were practically the last to the party with rechargeable hearing aids. They have been working on Fuel Cell technology for many years and when they make that breakthrough, it will change the powering of hearing aids forever. I say without hesitation that fuel cell technology will be a paradigm shift and I really hope Widex crack it. For now, they have introduced a Z Power system for their popular Beyond hearing aids.
Starkey Hearing Aids
Starkey also went for Z Power for their rechargeable hearing aids, although they have been doing some research into wireless charging of hearing aids. For now, this is the system they have gone for, but we half expect to see something different in the future. Update 2018: Starkey announced at their annual Expo conference that they would be introducing a brand new rechargeable hearing aid system to their range in February this year. The hearing aids will be called the Muse IQr and the will, in fact, be a Lithium-Ion powered rechargeable hearing aid system.
